Hamas is a Palestinian political organization with a significant paramilitary wing. The most prominent leaders of Hamas are:
- Ismail Haniyeh: He is widely considered the overall leader of Hamas. He has been a prominent member of the movement since the late 1980s and has held various positions, including Palestinian prime minister.
- Yahya Sinwar: He is the leader of the Hamas movement within the Gaza Strip. Sinwar is the founder of the Hamas security service known as Majd.
- Mohammed Deif: He leads the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm of the Hamas movement.
During the 2023 Israel-Hamas war, which began on October 7, 2023, these leaders have been significantly affected. Yahya Sinwar, for instance, is believed to be alive and underground. Israel has proposed allowing Hamas senior leaders to leave Gaza as part of a broader ceasefire agreement.
The current situation in Gaza is dire. The death toll has surpassed 24,000, and the area faces the risk of famine and disease outbreaks due to barriers to delivering vital aid. Over 100 days into the war, Israel is reportedly destroying Gaza’s food system and using food as a weapon against the Palestinian people.
As for Israel’s stance, they have rejected Hamas’ demands for a permanent cease-fire. Israel’s defense minister has stated that the intense Israeli military offensive in the southern Gaza Strip will soon be scaled back, but he is ruling out a cease-fire. Israel has also proposed allowing Hamas senior leaders to leave Gaza as part of a broader ceasefire agreement. However, the talks over the release of hostages in Gaza remain at an impasse over Hamas’ demand for a permanent cease-fire.
During the recent conflict, Saleh al-Arouri, a top Hamas political leader, and other members of the group were killed in an apparent Israeli strike in Beirut. The exact identities of the other members who were killed have not been specified. As of now, Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Hamas movement within the Gaza Strip, is believed to be alive and underground.
